“Ribeira Sacra is one of those unbelievable vine-growing places. When I was visiting the vineyards there in early August 2013, I was incredulous. I was moved by such an amazing vine landscape, by heroic viticulture that can justly be compared with other miraculous wine regions such as the Mosel Valley or the Douro Valley” Ferran Centelles
The former sommelier at El Bulli, Ferran Centelles, has just posted some reviews about Ribeira Sacra on Jancisrobinson.com . He loves our new winery Adega Algueira, declaring the wines to be ‘truly a revelation‘.
Ferran tasted all the top producers from Ribeira Sacra blind and gave his top scores for both the white and red to Algueira.
“When a wine is touching in a blind tasting it means that it really has something singular and extraordinary” on the Cortezada 2011 which is an unoaked blend of Godello 40%, Albarino 40% and Treixadura 20% from the single vineyard of Cortezada.
“Marvellous and electrifying… One of the most delicate wines in Spain” on the Pizarra 2011. ‘The Wine’ made from 100% old Mencia vines in the Caballocobo vineyard, grown on slate and schist soils, very very low production due to small bunches and berries. Foot trod, barrel fermented in old oak for one year.
We are really excited to be working with Adega Algueira and it’s a joy to read these reviews. For the winegeeks amongst you, Ferran’s also produced this little video about the region.
Not normally known for its wine journalism, the Daily Mail has come up trumps with a beautiful photographic article about the Ribeira Sacra region. It’s definitely worth a look…and as ever, the comments never fail to make an impression.
